Flying Cloud Wind Power Plant

The Flying Cloud Wind Power Plant is a 44 megawatt (MW) wind farm located in Dickinson County, Northwestern Iowa, near the towns of Lake Park and Spirit Lake. It is owned and operated by Iberdrola Renewables, Inc. The power produced by the Flying Cloud plant is being purchased by Interstate Power and Light, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation, an energy-services provider that serves more than three million customers worldwide.

While the entire project spans approximately 2,600 acres, the actual footprint of the turbines and associated facilities uses less than two percent of the total habitat within leased land. Landowners continue using the remainder of the land for farming.

In 2004, at the Flying Cloud Wind Power Plant dedication, Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack proclaimed July 19-25 "Iowa Wind Energy Week" while Iberdrola Renewables, Inc. and its partners sponsored a children's artwork contest celebrating wind power. The winning entry (shown to your right) adorned IBERDROLA's official Flying Cloud t-shirt.
